The Conflict between Flesh & Spirit

Filed under: General — Pastor Ray @ 9:33 pm

The New Testament Epistles had much to say about the inward conflict that raged between the flesh and spirit; “But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” Romans 7:23-24 KJV

The object of the Epistle of James was to demonstrate the importance of the practical side of actually living a Christian life. Yet, a careful reading of his Epistle clearly shows that he also was trying to help those who would read his writings understand the struggle and inner conflict that Christians would have to master to be a successful follower of Jesus; “From whence come wars and fighting’s among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? James 4:1 KJV

James, who’s Epistle was one of the earliest letters that was circulated throughout the churches, spent a lot of time developing the importance of devoting time to mastering true inward purity that would ultimately create the outward man. He warned repeatedly against being inwardly impure and then trying to cover up the inward sinfulness of the heart with an outward formalism or form of Godliness.

James is emphatic when he states that sin begins internally with evil desires (James 1:14; 4:1-4) and leads to death at maturation or when it is fully grown (James 1:15). This and other biblical remarks suggest that iniquity gains some of its power through repetition. When an individual commits a sin, it can become, through repetition, a habit, a vice, and a character trait. When one person imitates the sins of another, wickedness can quickly become institutionalized. Whole governments can become corrupt; whole industries can be based on deception or abuse of others. Societies can wrap themselves in a fabric of deceit. Thus one sinner encourages another and finally the wrong kind of friendship with the world makes one an enemy of God (James 4:4-6).

The World

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
 1 John 2:15-16 KJV

Many religious institutions have differing opinions as to what “the World” is. Some teach that worldliness is something you do that is displayed on the outward man similar to dressing up a mannequin for a store window display. For example there are some that foolishly teach that women should refrain from the cutting of their hair, the wearing of ear rings and other outwardly displayed things which have been deemed as “worldly” by church leadership. Such a twisted usage of scripture leads first to simple deception through manipulation of scripture this basic false doctrine ultimately culminates into full blown cultism where isolationism and extremism is both encouraged and practiced. I believe the scripture is very plain concerning this subject of worldliness.

True worldliness is; “giving into the lusts of the flesh.”  I know of a church that once had a choir director who felt it was imperative that “her” choir have rigid rules to legislate them to maintain a standard of holiness so that they would not be “worldly”. It was important that this choir look a certain way. To accomplish this, the choir director made up a list of rules designed to maintain a look of uniformity so everyone would see that “her” choir had strong standards of holiness. It is interesting to note that in this case the rules seemed to be mainly designed to impact women. For example; all the women in the choir had to pile their hair on their heads (they could not wear their hair down because this gave the impression that the women we signaling that they were ready for bed—this was the reasoning given by the choir director. Supposedly her former Pastor taught this doctrine). The women were also not allowed to wear pants of any kind nor other certain types of clothing, etc. Again, the choir director’s reasoning was so that the choir would not look “worldly”.  Yet, the Pastor shared with me that throughout her seven years as choir director, this very judgmental and legalistic choir director had three immoral sexual affairs, all of which were on going and lasted for several months/years at a time. Shockingly, they also included at one time a young man who was a minor 20 years her junior. The point here is that all her effort to cover up of the outward man did nothing to cover up the true “worldliness” that permeated her heart. She was saturated with “worldliness” yet stood in finger pointing judgment of others who had lesser problems in their life. Sadly, her secret sinfulness caused her to see nothing wrong in rising up in wicked rebellion against her innocent Pastor (he was guilty of only standing against sin) who was truly trying to help her and the victims of her sins. Even in the face of her rebellion, this Pastor did not reveal the true details of the sordid affairs that she was involved in. His silence caused people to literally hate him. Had he simply told a small portion of the truth that he knew, even her most ardent supporters would have turned against her. Ironically following the pattern of the epistle of James, the spirit of adultery was not isolated to this one woman. Slowly, it began to creep into the life of others until it became so out of control that the Pastor finally resigned the church to get his family away from perversion and ungodliness that had taken over the church. (The pastor shared with me that at the time of his resignation there were eleven cases of adultery and wife swapping in the church.)  Sadly, her adultery, gossip and backbiting literally caused division and strife in that church that has lasting results even to this day.

The adulteress should have been dealt with and this was my comment and strong advice to the Pastor. He should have taken a greater stand against her and her family who also manifested the same spirit. He was wrong in not standing against her when she committed the original sin in the first place and not allowed this Jezebel spirited woman to have the opportunity to sin the second time. When she ignored the conviction of the Holy Ghost and the Pastors admonition to quit her sinful ways, she should have been brought before the church and exposed for the Jezebel that she was and judged in her sinfulness, which might possibly have saved some of the many souls she caused to be lost by her lewd and ungodly behavior. I guess, we all learn as we grow, but I am confident that this particular Pastor has learned his lesson the hard way and he has assured me that he will not allow this problem ever to happen again.

When James speaks of the World, he means of course, human society apart from God. The whole system of things in this society of ours is anti-Christ and anti-God. Abraham was the friend of God (James 2:23); Lot was the friend of the world. Lot ended up in a war, and Abraham had to rescue him (Genesis 14).

A Christian gets involved with the world gradually. First, there is “the friendship of the world” (James 4:4). This results in our being “spotted” by the world (James 1:27) so that areas of our lives meet with the “approval” of the world. Friendship leads to loving the world (1 John 2:15-17), and this makes it easy to conform to the world (Romans 12:2). The sad result is being condemned with the world (1 Corinthians 11:32).

Friendship with the world is compared to adultery. The believer is “married to Christ” (Romans 7:4) and ought to be faithful to Him. The Jewish Christians who read this letter would understand this picture of “spiritual adultery” because the Prophets Ezekiel, Jeremiah, and Hosea used it when rebuking Judah for her sins (see Jeremiah 3:1-5; Ezekiel 23:1; Hosea 1:1-2:23). By adopting the sinful ways of the other nations, and by worshiping their gods, the nation of Judah committed adultery against her God.

The world is the enemy of God, and whoever wills to be a friend of the world cannot be the friend of God. Neither can he be if he lives for the flesh, for this is the second enemy James named.

At War with God (James 4:4-10)

The root cause of every war, internal and external, is rebellion against God. At the beginning of Creation, there was perfect harmony; but sin came into the world, and this led to conflict. Sin is lawlessness (1 John 3:4), and lawlessness is rebellion against God.

James names two additional enemies that we must not fraternize with if we want to be at peace with God.

The Flesh (vv. 1, 5).

By “the flesh” is meant the old nature that we inherited from Adam that is prone to sin. The flesh is not the body. The body is not sinful; the body is neutral. The Spirit may use the body to glorify God, or the flesh may use the body to serve sin. When a sinner yields to Christ, he receives a new nature within, but must continue to deal with the flesh which is neither removed nor reformed. For this reason, there is a battle within: “For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other so that you do not do what you want” (Galatians 5:17, NIV). This is what James terms “your lusts that are in your members” (James 4:1).

Living for the flesh means grieving the Holy Spirit of God who lives in us. “Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the Spirit He caused to live in us longs jealously?” (James 4:5, NIV, margin) Just as the world is the enemy of God, so also is the flesh the enemy of Gods presence in our life. There is a holy, loving jealousy that a husband and wife have over each other, and rightly so. The Spirit within jealously guards our relationship to God, and the Spirit is grieved when we sin against God’s love.

Living to please the old nature means to declare war against God. “The carnal mind is enmity against God” (Romans 8:7). To allow the flesh to control the mind is to lose the blessing of fellowship with God. Abraham had a spiritual mind; he walked with God and enjoyed peace. Lot had a carnal mind; he disobeyed God and experienced war. “For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Romans 8:6).

The Devil (vv. 6-7).

The world is in conflict with God; the flesh fights against His Spirit within us; and the devil opposes everything Christ came to be in our life. Pride is Satan’s great sin, and it is one of his chief weapons in His warfare against the saint and the Savior. God wants us to be humble; Satan wants us to be proud. “Ye shall be as God,” Satan promised Eve, and she believed him.

God wants us to depend on His grace (”But He giveth more grace”), while the devil wants us to depend on ourselves. Satan is the author of all “do-it-yourself’ spiritual enterprises. He enjoys inflating the ego and encouraging the believer to do it his own way. In spite of Jesus’ warnings about Satan’s plans, Peter fell into the snare, pulled out his sword, and tried to accomplish God’s will in his own way. What a mess he made of things!

Here, then, are three enemies that want to turn us away from God: the world, the flesh, and the devil. These enemies are left over from our old life of sin (Ephesians 2:1-3).

Christ has delivered us from them, but they still attack us. How can we overcome them? How can we be the friends of God and the enemies of the world, the flesh, and the devil?

James gives us three instructions to follow if we would enjoy peace instead of war.

Submit to God (v. 7). This word is a military term that means “get into your proper rank.” When a Buck Private acts like the General, there is going to be trouble! Unconditional surrender is the only way to complete victory. If there is any area of your life kept back from God, there will always be battles. This explains why uncommitted Christians cannot live with themselves or with other people.

“Neither give place to the devil,” cautions Paul in Ephesians 4:27. Satan needs a foothold in our lives if he is going to fight against God; and we give him that foothold. The way to resist the devil is to submit to God.

After King David committed adultery with Bathsheba, and killed her husband, he hid his sins for almost a year. There was war between him and God, and David had declared it. Read Psalms 32 and 51 to discover the high price David paid to be at war with God. When he finally submitted to God, David experienced peace and joy. This too he recorded in Psalms 32 and 51. Submission is an act of the will; it is saying, “Not my will but Thine be done. ”

Draw near to God (v. 8) . How do we do this? By confessing our sins and asking for His cleansing. “Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double-minded.” The Greek word translated purify means “make chaste.” This parallels the idea of “spiritual adultery” in James 4:4.

Dr. A. W. Tozer has a profound essay in one of his books, entitled, Nearness Is Likeness. The more we are like God, the nearer we are to God. I may be sitting in my living room with my Siamese cat on my lap, and my wife may be twenty feet away in the kitchen; yet I am nearer to my wife than to the cat because the cat is unlike me. We have very little in common.

God graciously draws near to us when we deal with the sin in our lives that keeps Him at a distance. He will not share us with anyone else; He must have complete control. The double-minded Christian can never be close to God. Again, Abraham and Lot come to mind. Abraham “drew near” and talked to God about Sodom (Genesis 18:23 ff), while Lot moved into Sodom and lost the blessing of God.

Humble yourselves before God (vv. 9-10). It is possible to submit outwardly and yet not be humbled inwardly. God hates the sin of pride (Proverbs 6:16-17), and He will chasten the proud believer until he is humbled. We have a tendency to treat sin too lightly, even to laugh about it (”Let your laughter be turned into mourning”). But sin is serious, and one mark of true humility is facing the seriousness of sin and dealing with our disobedience. “A broken and a contrite heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise” (Psalms 51:17).

Sometimes we hear a believer pray, “O Lord, humble me!” That is a dangerous thing to pray. Far better that we humble ourselves before God, confess our sins, weep over them, and turn from them. “To this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at My Word” (Isaiah 66:2). “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit” (Psalms 34:18).

If we obey these three instructions, then God will draw near, cleanse us, and forgive us; and the wars will cease! We will not be at war with God, so we will not be at war with ourselves. This means we will not be at war with others. “And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever” (Isaiah 32:17).

Put the government of your life on His shoulders, and let Him become the Prince of Peace in your life (Isaiah 9:6).

THE LOVE OF PREEMINENCE

Filed under: General, Bible Study — Pastor Ray @ 8:18 am

THE LOVE OF PREEMINENCE

Divine Prerogatives.

A.  THE EXCLUSIVE PREROGATIVE OF SATAN IS TO GIVE POWER.

a. He redirects Christians from seeking to know to seeking to gain position and preeminence.  SATAN HAS THE PREROGATIVE OF GIVING    POWER.  “TO WHOMSOEVER I WILL, I GIVE IT.”

b.  “The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. So if you worship me, it will all be yours.”” Luke 4:5-7

1. Satan (Luke 4:1-13)

i.  Even the enemy must admit that Jesus is the Son of God. “If Thou be the Son of God” (Luke 4:3,9) is not a supposition but an affirmation. It means “in view of the fact that You are the Son of God” (WUEST).

ii.  In fact, the fact of His deity was the basis for the first of the three temptations. “Since You are the Son of God,” Satan argued, “why be hungry? You can change stones into bread!”

2.  Satan wanted Jesus to disobey the Father’s will by using His divine power for His own purposes.

3. Why was Jesus tempted?

i.  For one thing, it was proof that the Father’s approval was deserved (Luke 4:22). Jesus is indeed the “beloved Son” who always does whatever pleases His Father (John 8:29).

ii.  Also, in His temptation, Jesus exposed the tactics of the enemy and revealed to us how we can overcome when we are tempted.

iii.  This experience helped prepare our Lord for His present ministry as our sympathetic High Priest and we may come to Him for the help we need to overcome the tempter (Hebrews 2:16-18; 4:14-16).

iv.  The first Adam was tempted in a beautiful Garden and failed The Last Adam was tempted in a dangerous wilderness (Mark 1:13) and succeeded.

4. We have at our disposal the same spiritual resources that Jesus used when He faced and defeated Satan:

i.     Prayer (Luke 3:21),
ii.    The Father’s love (Luke 3:23),
iii.    The power of the Spirit (Luke 4:1),
iv.    The Word of God (”It is written”  Luke 4:8).

Plus, we have in heaven the interceding Savior who has defeated the enemy completely Satan tempts us to bring out the worst in us, but God can use these difficult experiences to put the best into us. Temptation is Satan’s weapon to defeat us, but it can become God’s tool to build us (see James 1:1-8,13-17). In the first temptation, Satan suggested that there must be something wrong with the Father’s love since His “beloved Son” was hungry. In years past Israel hungered in the wilderness, and God sent them bread from heaven; so surely Jesus could use His divine power to feed Himself and save His life. Satan subtly used this same approach on Eve: “God is holding out on you! Why cant you eat of every tree in the Garden? If He really loved you, He would share everything with You!” But the test was even more subtle than that for Satan was asking Jesus to separate the physical from the spiritual. In the Christian life, eating is a spiritual activity, and we can use even our daily food to glorify God (Romans 14:20-21; 1 Corinthians 10:31). Whenever we label different spheres of our lives “physical,” “material,” “financial,” or “spiritual,” we are bound to leave God out of areas where He rightfully belongs. Christ must be first in everything, or He is first in nothing (Matthew 6:33). It is better to be hungry in the will of God than satisfied out of the will of God. When our Lord quoted Deuteronomy 8:3, He put the emphasis on the word man. As the eternal Son of God, He had power to do anything; but as the humble Son of man, He had authority to do only that which the Father willed. (Note carefully John 5:17,30; 8:28; 10:17-18; 15:10,15.) As the Servant, Jesus did not use His divine attributes for selfish purposes (Philippians 2:5-8). Because He was man, He hungered; but He trusted the Father to meet His needs in His own time and His own way

 The Bible Exposition Commentary

B.      THE EXCLUSIVE PREROGATIVE OF CHRISTIANS IS TO KNOW GOD’S SACRED SECRETS, GOD’S MYSTERIES.

1.  “He said, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, “‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’” Luke 8:10 NIV

2.  Hearing the Word (8:4-21)

A. “Take heed that you hear!” (vv. 4-15)

1.  The word “hear” is used nine times in these verses, for it is by our hearing that we take the Word into our hearts where it can create faith (Romans 10:17).

a.  The Word is like seed because it has life in it and can produce fruit when it is planted (received and understood).

b. The human heart is like soil and must be prepared if the Word is to be planted and fruitful. It seems evident that three-fourths of the hearts did not produce fruit and therefore represent those who never were saved (3:8). It takes patience to cultivate the seed and produce a harvest (v. 15), and we must not give up (Galatians 6:9). It is important that we sow the seed in our own hearts as well as in the hearts of others.

2.       “Take heed how you hear!” (vv. 16-18)

a.       The image now is that of a lamp. We receive the Word so that we might share the truth with others; and the more we receive, the more we have to share. If we receive carelessly, we will have nothing to give. We will be like a lamp without oil. God shares His secrets with us, not for us to hide them, but so we can teach them to others.

3.       “Take heed why you hear!” (vv. 19-21)

a.       Do we hear the Word just to increase our knowledge and boast about it? (1 Corinthians 8:1) Or do we hear God’s Word because we want to obey it? Jesus was not being rude to His family.

b.      He used their appearance to teach a valuable lesson: if we desire spiritual intimacy with Jesus, we must listen to His Word, receive it, and obey it. Obedience not only enables us to learn more truth (John 7:17), but it brings us closer to the Lord in His spiritual family.
 b.       THE EXCLUSIVE PREROGATIVE OF JESUS IS TO REVEAL GOD’S SACRED SECRETS

                                                              i.      21 “In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.”

ii.      22 “All things [“ALL THINGS (ALL KNOWLEDGE, IN GREEK) ARE GIVEN TO ME OF MY FATHER.”] are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.”

iii.      23 “And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:” Luke 10:21-23 KJV

c.       THE SAME GREEK WORD OCCURS IN EACH OF THE THREE PREROGATIVE SCRIPTUJRES.  THAT WORD IS “DIDOMEE”.  IT IS TRANSLATED EITHER “DELIVERED UNTO ME,” OR “TO YOU IT IS GIVEN.”

                                                              i.      didomi (did’-o-mee); a prolonged form of a primary verb (which is used as an altern. in most of the tenses); to give (used in a very wide application, properly, or by implication, literally or figuratively; greatly modified by the connection):

ii.      IT MEANS BEQUEATHED, GIVEN AS A SPECIAL DISPENSATION.

SATAN was given the prerogative to give power.
WE were given the prerogative to receive revelation, to know.
JESUS was given the power to reveal which He does by His Spirit.

Luke 4:5-7
“The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. So if you worship me, it will all be yours.””
 NIV
1.     Satan’s constant purpose is to stifle revelation.

2 Cor. 4:4   In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
2.     Revelation is stifled when men seek preeminence

John 16:12   I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

1Cor. 3:2   I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.   3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?   4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?   5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?

Eph. 4:17   This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,   18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:   19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.   20 But ye have not so learned Christ;   21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:   22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;   23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

3John 9   I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.

Luke 9:44   Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.   45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.   46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.

Luke 22:24   And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.

Matt. 18:1   At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?   2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,   3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.   4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.   5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

Mark 9:33   And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?   34 But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.   35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.   36 And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,   37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.

Luke 14:8   When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honorable man than thou be bidden of him;   9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.   10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.   11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
 Luke 20:46   Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;

Matt. 20:25   But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.   26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;   27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:   28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

This Bible study was developed from & conversations with Bishop Robert Sabin of St. Paul MN. It is a Bible study that shows how the love of power can blind you from the revelation that God has for you. I urge you to beware if seeing you don’t see and hearing you don’t hear…….

Suffering for the Sake of the Body

The Pursuit of People Through Pain

Contents

Introduction

God’s Sovereignty Over Suffering

What Is the Meaning of Global Suffering?

The Necessity, Nature and Purposes Of Christian Suffering

How Shall We Joyfully Endure the Measure of Suffering Appointed for Us?

Introduction
The great aim of Satan is to prevent and weaken and, if possible, destroy faith. In 1 Thessalonians 3:5 Paul says, “For this reason, when I could endure it no longer, I also sent to find out about your faith, for fear that the tempter might have tempted you, and our labor would be in vain.” If he can do this, he can destroy the mission of the church and the people of the earth. Jesus said in John 8:44, “He was a murderer from the beginning.” Destroy faith. Destroy missions. Destroy people. And thus dishonor God. That is his aim. Satan uses pleasure and pain to do it. Pleasure: to make us doubt God’s satisfying greatness. Pain: to make us doubt God’s sovereign goodness.

To triumph over Satan (in pleasure and pain) we need to know the Word of Truth that teaches God’s sovereignty over Satan. By the Word of God we will triumph. “I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one” (1 John 2:14). May God teach us now his Word, that we might triumph for our own souls and for the sake of our neighbors and the nations.

What follows are the texts that form the skeleton of discussion when I teach the seminar on suffering as part of The Bethlehem Institute at Bethlehem Baptist Church. This is not a book on suffering. It is a collection of Biblical passages with some occasional comments. The interpretation of these texts happens orally in the presentations that I make as I use overhead transparencies of the Scriptures. I hope that, even if you are not able to take this course, these passages from God’s Word will help you forge your own strong convictions concerning God’s wise and gracious sovereignty in our suffering. I pray that God will make us all better ministers of mercy and truth in times of affliction.

God’s Sovereignty over Suffering
Ten Aspects of God’s Sovereignty over Suffering and Satan’s Hand in It
1. God’s Sovereignty over Satan’s Delegated World Rule

John 12:31

Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

Luke 4:5-7

And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. “Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.”

Romans 13:1

Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.

Daniel 2:20-21

Daniel said, “Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to Him. It is He who changes the times and the epochs; he removes kings and establishes kings.”

Daniel 4:17

The Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind, and bestows it on whom He wishes, and sets over it the lowliest of men.

1 Chronicles 21:1

Then Satan stood up against Israel and moved David to number Israel.

And they observed the Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days with joy, for the LORD had caused them to rejoice, and had turned the heart of the king of Assyria toward them to encourage them in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.

Psalm 33:10-11

The LORD nullifies the counsel of the nations; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart from generation to generation.

2. God’s Sovereignty over Satan’s Angels (Demons, Evil Spirits)
Daniel 10:12-13

Then he said to me, “Do not be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart on understanding this and on humbling yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to your words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia was withstanding me for twenty-one days; then behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia.”

Mark 1:27

They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”

Matthew 8:29, 32

And they cried out, saying, “What business do we have with each other, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?” . . . And He said to them, “Go!” And they came out and went into the swine.

3. God’s Sovereignty over Satan’s Hand in Persecution
1 Peter 5:8-10

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.

1 Peter 4:19

Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.

1 Peter 3:17

For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.

Luke 22:53

When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness are yours. (See also Hebrews 12:3-11)

4. God’s Sovereignty over Satan’s Life-taking Power
John 8:44

You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning . . .

Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Deuteronomy 32:39

See now that I, I am He, and there is no god besides Me; it is I who put to death and give life. I have wounded and it is I who heal, and there is no one who can deliver from My hand.

1 Samuel 2:6

The LORD kills and makes alive; he brings down to Sheol and raises up.

James 4:13-16

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.” But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil.

1 Corinthians 11:29-32

For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep. But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world.

Hebrews 2:14

Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.

John 11:43

Lazarus, come forth!

Luke 7:14

Young man, arise!

Mark 5:41

“Talitha kum!

5. God’s Sovereignty over Satan’s Hand in Natural Disasters

Job 1:8-22

The LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.” Then Satan answered the LORD, “Does Job fear God for nothing? Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But put forth Your hand now and touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face.” Then the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him.” . . . [A messenger to Job:] “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, and the Sabeans attacked and took them. They also slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands and made a raid on the camels and took them and slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, and behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.” Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.

Job 37:9-14

Out of the south comes the storm. . . . [God] disperses the cloud of His lightning. It changes direction, turning around by His guidance, that it may do whatever He commands it on the face of the inhabited earth. Whether for a rod . . . or for lovingkindness, He causes it to happen. . . . Stand and consider the wonders of God!

Psalm 135:5-7

The LORD is great. . . . Whatever the LORD pleases, He does, in heaven and in earth. . . . He makes lightnings for the rain, and brings forth the wind from His treasuries.

Psalm 148:7

Praise the LORD from the earth, sea monsters and all deeps; fire and hail, snow and clouds; stormy wind, fulfilling His word

Mark 4:37-39

There arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat . . . And Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.

Isaac Watts:

There’s not a plant or flower below,
But makes Thy glories known;
And clouds arise, and tempests blow,
By order from Thy throne.
(“I Sing the Mighty Power of God”)

6. God’s Sovereignty over Satan’s Sickness-causing Power

And this woman, a daughter of Abraham as she is, whom Satan has bound for eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?

Exodus 4:11

The LORD said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the LORD?

John 9:1-3

As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him.”

Job 2:3-10

The LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man fearing God and turning away from evil. And he still holds fast his integrity, although you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause.” Satan answered the LORD and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life. However, put forth Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse You to Your face.” So the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your power, only spare his life.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. And he took a potsherd to scrape himself while he was sitting among the ashes. Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die!” But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

Job 42:1-2

Then Job answered the LORD and said, “I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.”

2 Corinthians 12:7-9

Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me - to keep me from exalting myself! Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

Numbers 16:45-50

“Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them instantly.” Then they fell on their faces. Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer and put in it fire from the altar, and lay incense on it; then bring it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone forth from the LORD, the plague has begun!” Then Aaron took it as Moses had spoken, and ran into the midst of the assembly, for behold, the plague had begun among the people. So he put on the incense and made atonement for the people. He took his stand between the dead and the living, so that the plague was checked. But those who died by the plague were 14,700, besides those who died on account of Korah. Then Aaron returned to Moses at the doorway of the tent of meeting, for the plague had been checked.

7. God’s Sovereignty over Satan’s Use of Animals (and Plants)

[Christ sends Paul] to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the authority of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.

10. God’s Sovereignty over Satan’s Spiritual Captivity
2 Timothy 2:24-26

The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.

The Final Removal of Satan Altogether

Isaiah 46:9-10

Remember the former things long past, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done, saying, “My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure . . .”

Yet to this day the LORD has not given you a heart to know, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear.”

Revelation 17:16-17

And the ten horns which you saw, and the beast, these will hate the harlot and will make her desolate and naked, and will eat her flesh and will burn her up with fire. For God has put it in their hearts to execute His purpose by having a common purpose, and by giving their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God will be fulfilled.

What Is the Meaning of Global Suffering?
It is, in part, God’s judgment on the world for its sinfulness and the portrayal in the physical world of the moral and spiritual horror of God-belittling sin.
A Downward Spiral of Depravity

Romans 1:18, 24, 26, 28

For the wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness . . . Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them . . . For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural . . . And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper . . .

Death
Romans 5:12, 15, 17-19

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned . . . By the transgression of the one the many died . . . By the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one . . . Through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men . . . For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.

Futility and Groaning
Romans 8:18-23

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.

Yet Mingled with Many Mercies
Romans 2:4-5

Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God.

Matthew 5:44-45

But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

Acts 14:16-17

In the generations gone by He permitted all the nations to go their own ways; and yet He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good and gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.

Conclusion
A world of horrendous suffering should not cause us to think of God as a horrendous God, but of the magnitude and depth of the ugliness and heinousness of God-belittling pride and unbelief and indifference and scorn. This is what hell will mean for all eternity – a witness to the heinousness of God-demeaning pride (2 Thessalonians. 1:7-9; Matthew 25:41, 46; Revelation 14:11).

It is God’s message of warning and awakening that the world should take seriously their desperate moral condition and repent.
Revelation 9:20-21

The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, so as not to worship demons, and the idols of gold and of silver and of brass and of stone and of wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk; and they did not repent of their murders nor of their sorceries nor of their immorality nor of their thefts.

Revelation 16:9

Men were scorched with fierce heat; and they blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they did not repent so as to give Him glory.

Revelation 16:11

And they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores; and they did not repent of their deeds.

Conclusion
These texts show that the plagues and catastrophes, even when they are designed for judgment in general, also have in them a call for repentance so that anyone who will wake up to the ugliness of his sin and repent and turn to Christ, could be saved.

Satan is not obliterated but permitted to torment the world because it is God’s purpose to glorify the power and beauty of sacrificial, sin-forgiving grace through defeating Satan progressively through the death of Christ and through its application by the Spirit in Christians’ lives.
The “devil and his angels” are irredeemable. Jesus implies this when He says that “the eternal fire . . . has been prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41). And Jude confirms it when he says that the fallen angels are being “kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day” (v. 6). Therefore, the reason Christ withholds His judgment from them now is not to give them a chance to repent and be saved.

The key is that Satan is defeated by the death of Jesus. Paul puts it this way, referring to the death of Christ: “When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities [by the death of Christ], He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him” (Colossians 2:15).

The weapon of soul-destroying sin and guilt is taken out of Satan’s hand. He is disarmed of the single weapon that can condemn us – unforgiven sin. We see this in 1 Corinthians 15:55-57, “O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Now without sin and law to condemn and accuse and oppress us, Satan is a defeated foe. He is disarmed. Christ has triumphed over him, not by putting him out of existence, but by letting him live and watch, while millions of saints find forgiveness for their sins, and turn their back on Satan because of the greater glory of the grace of Christ.

It was a costly triumph. But God’s values are not so easily reckoned. If God had simply terminated Satan, then it would not have been so clear that God is both strong and infinitely more to be desired than Satan. God wills for His glory to shine forth not only through acts of physical power, but also through acts of moral and spiritual power that display the beauty of His grace with lavish colors. To take sinners out of Satan’s hands by virtue of Christ’s sin-bearing sacrifice, and by His law-fulfilling obedience to the Father, was a more glorious victory than mere annihilation of the enemy.

If Christ obliterated all devils and demons now (which he could do), His sheer power would be seen as glorious, but His superior beauty and worth would not shine so brightly as when humans renounce the promises of Satan and take pleasure in the greater glory of Christ.

The Necessity, Nature and Purposes of Christian Suffering
The Necessity of Christian Suffering: Must Christians Suffer?
Mark 8:34-35

And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.”

Luke 14:26

If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.

Luke 14:33

So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.

John 12:25

He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal.

John 15:20

Remember the word that I said to you, “A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also.

Matthew 10:25

It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign the members of his household!

John 20:21

So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”

1 Peter 2:20-21

For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God. For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps . . .

1 Peter 4:12-14

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

Acts 14:21-22

After they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, “Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.”

1 Thessalonians 3:2-3

We sent Timothy, our brother and God’s fellow worker in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you as to your faith, so that no one would be disturbed by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that we have been destined for this.

Romans 8:16-18

The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

2 Timothy 3:12

Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

The Nature of Christian Suffering: Is There a Difference Between Plague and Persecution? Cancer and Conflict?
In choosing to follow Christ in the way he directs, we choose all that this path includes under his sovereign providence. Thus all suffering that comes in the path of obedience is suffering with Christ and for Christ – whether it is cancer or conflict.

All experiences of suffering in the path of Christian obedience, whether from persecution or sickness or accident, have this in common: they all threaten our faith in the goodness of God and tempt us to leave the path of obedience. Therefore, every triumph of faith and all perseverance in obedience are testimonies to the goodness of God and the preciousness of Christ – whether the enemy is sickness, Satan, sin or sabotage.

Therefore, all suffering, of every kind, that we endure in the path of our Christian calling is a suffering “with Christ” and “for Christ.” With him in the sense that the suffering comes to us as we are walking with him by faith, and in the sense that it is endured in the strength that he supplies through his sympathizing high-priestly ministry (Hebrews 4:15). For him in the sense that the suffering tests and proves our allegiance to his goodness and power, and in the sense that it reveals his worth as an all-sufficient compensation and prize.

Not only that, the suffering of sickness and the suffering of persecution have this in common: they are both intended by Satan for the destruction of our faith (1 Thessalonians 3:4-5), and governed by God for the purifying of our faith (Hebrews 12:3-11; 2 Corinthians 12:7-10).

Finally, suffering from persecution and sickness are often indistinguishable. Suppose that the apostle Paul got pneumonia from all this work and exposure. Would that pneumonia have been “persecution”? Paul did not make a distinction between being beaten by rods or having a boating accident or being cold while traveling between towns. For him any suffering that befell him while serving Christ was part of the “cost” of discipleship. When a missionary’s child gets diarrhea, we think of this as part of the price of faithfulness. But if any parent is walking in the path of obedience to God’s calling, it is the same price. What turns sufferings into sufferings “with” and “for” Christ is not how intentional our enemies are, but how faithful we are. If we are Christ’s, then what befalls us is for his glory and for our good whether it is caused by enzymes or by enemies.

Conclusion

When we speak of the purposes of suffering in the following section, we mean both persecution, and the accidents and sicknesses that befall us in any path of faith.

The Purposes of Christian Suffering: Why Does God Permit and Order the Sufferings of His People?
To Promote Deeper Faith and Hope and Holiness of Life
2 Corinthians 1:8-9

For we do not want you to be unaware, brethren, of our affliction which came to us in Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life; indeed, we had the sentence of death within ourselves so that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead . . .

Hebrews 12:3-11

For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin; and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor faint when you are reproved by Him; for those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, and He scourges every son whom He receives.” it is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

Romans 5:3-4

And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope . . .

James 1:2-4

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

1 Peter 1:6-8

In this [promised salvation] you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory . . .

To Increase the Joy of Our Experience of Our Reward in Heaven
2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Matthew 5:11-12

Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

To Awaken Others out of Indifference and Make Them More Radical and Bold for Christ
Philippians 1:12-14

Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel, so that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else, and that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear.

To Present to Unbelievers Tangibly in Our Suffering the Kind of Compelling Sacrificial Love that Christ Extends to Them from the Cross
1 Thessalonians 1:5-6

Our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. You also became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much tribulation with the joy of the Holy Spirit.

Colossians 1:24

Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions.

Philippians 2:29-30

Receive [Epaphroditus] then in the Lord with all joy, and hold men like him in high regard; because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was lacking in your service to me.

Galatians 6:17

From now on let no one cause trouble for me, for I bear on my body the brand-marks of Jesus.

2 Corinthians 4:10-12

[I am] always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death works in us, but life in you.

2 Timothy 2:9-10

I suffer hardship even to imprisonment as a criminal; but the word of God is not imprisoned. For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory.

To Reposition the Troops of Christian “Soldiers” into Places They Would Otherwise Not Have Gone
Acts 8:1

Saul was in hearty agreement with putting him to death. And on that day a great persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.

Acts 11:19-21

So then those who were scattered because of the persecution that occurred in connection with Stephen made their way to Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to Jews alone. But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who came to Antioch and began speaking to the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a large number who believed turned to the Lord.

To Magnify the Power of Christ in Our Weakness, and the Sufficiency and Surpassing Value of Christ over All Worldly Comforts and Pleasures
2 Corinthians 12:9-10

And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

Philippians 1:19-23

I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better.

How Shall We Joyfully Endure the Measure of Suffering Appointed for Us?
Hebrews 10:32-34

But remember the former days, when, after being enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings, partly by being made a public spectacle through reproaches and tribulations, and partly by becoming sharers with those who were so treated. For you showed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession and a lasting one.

Hebrews 11:24-26

By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward.

Hebrews 12:1-3

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Hebrews 13:13-14

So, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach. For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come.
